Color Space

It's a hot topic in the office trying to get these things to print right. Printers are stubborn so I don't think it's going to change, but this guy tells us a few reasons why it might be a good idea.

Twenty Twenty

eKarjala's Internet '96 brings us back to 1996. Web design has evolved slightly since then. I can't imagine what will stand the test of time in twelve years—and get this that's the year 2020. The one that jumped out the most to me was Nickelodeon's blog/video cast [[Natalie's Backseat Traveling Webshow]] which was synchronized with tv shorts. That's the multi-platform that the all the networks have only just caught onto.

People Watching

mental_floss' Taking Pictures of Strangers makes me wish I could have the courage to take a picture of someone I didn't know without them knowing. I love people watching. Whenever I'm with someone, I love to point out someone who caught my attention. Oh come on, you do it too. Point out the person with the funny hair or wierd pants. My dream art show for a while has been to capture that kind of candid moment in paintings. I've secretly been hoping to paint it for a while, but not much has materialized. Nothing is more fascinating to me. But I've wanted to take reference photos and capture the actual moments first. I'm too afraid that they'll look back. If I read that from someone else, I'd tell them "Oh get over it and just do it."

Do Trend on Me

There's an excellent and comprehensive article article about logo design trends in 2008 from My favorites is the rainbow logo if only for its infinite variety. I'm a sucker for color though. I also like the ugly 80s logos! There is so much room in design for the ugly-beautiful. Do we really need everything to be too pretty and too polished?

As for transparency? Well, it's true that it can't be reproduced well in one certain mediums. Sometimes you need a one color design. It's okay to take advantage of the medium that it's used for, even if it's sacrificing consistency slightly. I've seen style manuals with several variations on logos and its possible to have a transparent compatible version and a one color compatible version. I'm not really afraid when designing for spot color on newsprint. It often pays off to try things that other people say won't work.

Still, it's not just about being trendy. So apply these ideas with both inspiration and restraint. It's still about expressing visual information. Not only that, but logos can sometimes stay around for a very long time. So I wouldn't recommend something that could easily become dated. Unless it was for a time specific event maybe. I also don't think that making intelligent use of the trends would make them dated either. Logo 101 is so web 1.0.

Invisible Logic

I saw the movie The Invisible. It was bad. Really bad. It's filled with plot holes. I have not seen a movie this poorly developed in a very long time. And I've seen some bad ones. Characters do things with no apparent motivation. The movie makes you ask "why?" But don't wait for the answers. I'm all for suspension of disbelief, but this one passes the threshold too much too often. Any answers you do get are one-dimensional and unimaginative. Worst of all, I spent much of the movie hoping that what I suspected would happen wouldn't. Because it would be ridiculous. But no they didn't spare me. Watching it on DVD, my friend Shane and I were reeling. We'd yell why is this happening. Most disappointing to me is how misleading the trailer turned out to be. The trailer touts that the main guy (Justin Chatwin) will have to solve the mystery of his death. There's no mystery as the circumstances are given up right away. Don't worry though, the scenes with the old man from the trailer explaining this are omitted. I didn't expect a great movie even with that trailer, but it was still horrifyingly worse than I could have imagined. The tough girl is touted as a victim of circumstance, but I didn't see any reason to feel sorry for her. There's no heroism in caring about those who care about you, it's much more moving to care about those who don't. Skip it!

If you didn't notice, there was a new episode of the SketcheeBook Podcast last week. The next new one will go out this Tuesday! I'm having some problems with the audio recording quality that I didn't have before. Hopefully I can get them squared away soon. For these two episodes, it will have to do.
